Students use the familiar tune and movements of “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” to identify the place value of each digit in a multi-digit number.

Students practice skip counting while passing a clap around a circle to a steady beat. The group skip-counts by 2s, 5s, or 10s, saying one number with each clap. As students become more comfortable, increase the tempo to build fluency, listening, and automaticity.

Students create a “secret handshake” that represents a multiplication equation, choreographing a sequence of unique movements based on the first factor, then repeats the sequence according to the second factor.

Baltimore City teacher Gena Proctor and Music Educator Murray Piper developed these resources to help students make deep connections between Ned from Code Talker and how he was impacted by WWII. Students will explore body percussion and visual art, learn about fluency and the connection to musical rhythms, and complete a simulation that puts them in Ned’s shoes as a code talker.
