Featuring the Maryland Center for History and Culture, which holds the largest collection of Maryland culture in the state. Their thought-provoking exhibitions bring history to life using objects, artwork, and documents that engage visitors in the stories of events and people who have shaped Maryland and America over time. Their collection encompasses more than 350,000 objects, from pre-settlement times to present day, and represents nearly every aspect of Maryland history and life.

Why should teachers and students be excited about your programming?

School programs at the Maryland Center for History and Culture are designed to make history interactive, relevant, and engaging. Students gain essential social studies skills by engaging with the MCHC collections through primary source inquiry and hands-on activities. Our programs spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and highlight diverse perspectives from Maryland’s history. There is something for every grade level with program topics ranging from pre-settlement times through the Civil Rights era. We also offer a range of program types including on-site, virtual, and our traveling trunk program.

Is there a particular program you’d like to highlight? What makes it special?

In Spring 2026, MCHC opened the WayFinders: Making Sense of Our World exhibition. This exhibition, designed for ages 5 and up, invites families to use their senses to learn history together. Sniff a beehive, crank a bucket elevator, listen to cicadas, and play in the Shadow puppet theater! Now, educators can also book the WayFinders guided school program designed for grades K-5. In this new tour, students will engage with their senses as they learn about 5 wayfinders in Maryland’s history. Through a variety of hands-on activities students can learn to survey land like Benjamin Banneker and create broadsides like Mary Katharine Goddard. Learn more about this exciting new program by visiting the “School Programs” section on our website!
