Labor Movements & Protest Music during the Industrial Era
Students examine how music unified labor movements during the Industrial Era by analyzing historical protest songs and creating their own using lyrical substitution.
The Harlem Renaissance
Students explore the Harlem Renaissance through visual art, historical texts, and Blues music by composing and performing an original 12-bar Blues song from a historical perspective.
Participating in Government
Explore civil disobedience and how artists use zines to respond to social issues. Students will create their own handmade zine on a government-related issue and share it through a See, Wonder, Connect peer evaluation.
Forms of Government
Explore democratic and authoritarian systems and create a persuasive song about one of the government types.
Effecting Change
Baltimore artist Alyssa Fenix and city teacher Vesna Grujicic worked with the Springboard grade 10 unit, "Voices in Synthesis," creating arts integrated activities that guide students to advocate for themselves, others, and issues of importance to them. Students will be empowered to see their voices as essential in making change, and use them in visual art activities to state claims and arguments.
Convince Me I’m Wrong!
Inspired by Odell Grade 10 Unit, "How Do We Determine the Right Thing to Do?" Ephraim Nehemiah and Ryan Fan delve into the processes of ethical decision-making and the reasoning behind credible arguments. Using the power of the arts to persuade, they explore ambiguous scenarios in philosophy, literary texts, and media, helping students develop skills in constructing arguments through live debate and written narratives.
