In this Arts Integration resource set Grade 1 ELA, Jordan Moore and Leah Jorgensen-Moore respond to the Wit & Wisdom Grade 1 unit on "Powerful Forces" by creating activities that explore the power of wind and breath in music.

Teaching Artist Linda Whelihan worked with Sarah Aguda, Arts Integration Coordinator, to create a vibrant and colorful exploration of the second grade Wit & Wisdom Module "A Season of Change." Students will explore the changing seasons by learning how to create visual vocabulary decks, making chameleon-shaped printing plates, and creating crayon-resist nature journals.

Jordan Moore and Leah Jorgensen-Moore use music about animals - both with lyrics and without - in connection with the Wit & Wisdom Kindergarten Unit, "Once Upon a Farm." Just as written stories have elements that communicate characteristics and settings, music also has elements that communicate aspects of personality and gesture. Students will love hearing the sounds of animals imagined through music!

Inspired by Odell Grade 10 Unit, "How Do We Determine the Right Thing to Do?" Ephraim Nehemiah and Ryan Fan delve into the processes of ethical decision-making and the reasoning behind credible arguments. Using the power of the arts to persuade, they explore ambiguous scenarios in philosophy, literary texts, and media, helping students develop skills in constructing arguments through live debate and written narratives.

Use theater strategies to activate students' imagination in the grade 5 Wit & Wisdom "Cultures in Conflict." Participants will learn how to lead a "Viewpoints" theater activity, discover how to incorporate props into the classroom, and practice character-specific speeches and monologues.

In this reflection on the Wit & Wisdom grade 3 unit, "A New Home," Dan and Claudia Zanes explore how stories of immigration and heritage can become powerful means of communication. Through songwriting and call & response, they create activities that support students in communicating their personal stories and celebrating their identities and narratives.

Inspired by the Wit & Wisdom grade 2 module "Civil Rights Hero," these lessons and materials support students in analyzing and writing lyrics, designing self-portraits and posters, and composing narrative poetry -- all inspired by the beautiful and rich visual art and music that came out of the Civil Rights movement.

Linda Whelihan and Sarah Aguda time-travel through American history in this arts-integrated exploration of the Wit & Wisdom Kindergarten Unit, 'America, Then and Now.' With demonstrations of image transfer, zine creation, and spokespuppets using recycled materials, these lesson plans and materials will help you bring students' study of the past to vivid life.
